Those activities also fragment migratory species’ pathways, sometimes making it impossible for them to complete their journeys. A stingray in a North Carolina aquarium became pregnant without a male in the tank. Scientists believe that a male shark could be the father. AdvertisementStaff at an aquarium in North Carolina were left confused after a stingray became pregnant despite there not being a male in her tank. Scientists have a few theories about how this might have happened — and one involves a male shark. The Aquarium and Shark Lab by Team Ecco in Hendersonville was initially concerned that the stingray had cancer when she began to swell.

Today, people from around the globe are streaming across the southern border, most of them just as eager to work. But rather than trying to elude U.S. authorities, the overwhelming majority of migrants seek out border agents, sometimes waiting hours or days in makeshift encampments, to surrender. In fact, it is a crucial step toward being able to apply for asylum — now the surest way for migrants to stay in the United States, even if few will ultimately win their cases. We are living in an era of mass migration — fueled by conflict, climate change, poverty and political repression and encouraged by the proliferation of TikTok and YouTube videos chronicling migrants’ journeys to the United States. Migrants from Africa, Asia and South America are mortgaging their family land, selling their cars or borrowing money from loan sharks to embark on long, often treacherous journeys to reach the United States.

CNN —Drone footage shot off the coast of Southern California may have revealed the first ever glimpse of a newborn great white shark in the wild. Adult great white sharks are gray on top and white underneath. “I believe it was a newborn white shark shedding its embryonic layer.”The case for the baby great white sightingWhile in utero, embryonic sharks feed on unfertilized eggs for protein. If their assessment is correct, it’s the first time that a newborn great white shark has been observed in the wild. In addition, other researchers have suggested this location off the coast of central California is a birthing ground for great white sharks.

CNN —Megalodons, the huge prehistoric sharks depicted in movies such as “The Meg,” had more slender bodies than was previously thought, according to a new study. Many mysteries remain about the biology of megalodons, but until now, great white sharks had been used to model their appearance. The dark grey silhouette depicts the previously reconstructed body form, based on the great white shark. Kenshu Shimada/DePaul UniversityThis new research is based on the reappraisal of an incomplete set of fossil vertebrae found in Belgium. The research suggests that “the modern great white shark may not necessarily serve as a good modern analog for assessing at least certain aspects” of megalodon biology, said Shimada.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Scientists have mapped the largest coral reef deep in the ocean, stretching hundreds of miles off the U.S. Atlantic coast. The largest yet known deep coral reef "has been right under our noses, waiting to be discovered,” said Derek Sowers, an oceanographer at the nonprofit Ocean Exploration Trust. Unlike tropical coral reefs, where photosynthesis is important for growth, coral this far down must filter food particles out of the water for energy. Deep coral reefs provide habitat for sharks, swordfish, sea stars, octopus, shrimp and many other kinds of fish, the scientists said. The world's largest tropical coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, stretches for about 1,430 miles (2,301 kilometers).

I set out to record the migration routes of silky sharks, named for their smooth skin. Instead, in a story filled with twists and turns, I ended up documenting the rare phenomenon of a shark regenerating a dorsal fin. Silky sharks are commonly found in the open ocean and grow to be 10 feet long. In the many shark photos he sent, I noticed a silky shark with an oddly shaped dorsal fin. The incident comes days after a woman was killed in an apparent shark attack at a Mexican resort. Shark attacks, particularly fatal ones, are rare: On average, sharks kill five people per year in unprovoked attacks, CNN previously reported. The odds of getting fatally attacked by one of the carnivorous fish are less than 1 in 4 million, according to the International Shark Attack File. HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Navy estimates it will cost $1.5 million to salvage a jet plane that crashed on a coral reef in Hawaii nearly two weeks ago, officials said Saturday. The Navy plans to use inflatable cylinders to lift and roll the jet plane off the reef where it crashed on Nov. 20. Hawaii state officials are due to examine the reef for damage once the plane is removed. The Navy considered floating the jet within range of a crane on the runway and then lifting the plane onto land.
